Liquid Crystal Optics
Prof.
Stephen D. Jacobs
Our work in the field of liquid crystals spans three
decades. The OMEGA laser at the Laboratory for Laser
Energetics is the only high peak power laser system
in the world to use large aperture liquid crystal polarizers
and wave plates. OMEGA contains 300 devices in apertures
to 200 mm. Currently our liquid crystal group is conducting
research on polymer cholesteric liquid crystal flakes
as polarizing pigments for active e-o applications such
as reflective particle displays and electronic paper.

Optical Metrology
and System Alignment by Phase Retrieval
Prof.
James Fienup
The Phase Retrieval and Imaging Science Group conducts
research into obtaining improved performance in imaging
systems and measuring wavefronts by computational means.
Current projects include phase retrieval as means for
precision optical metrology for aspheric surfaces and
for alignment of optical systems.
