Optical Fabrication and Testing

  • Science of Optical Finishing

    Prof. Stephen D. Jacobs
The group conducts work on optical finishing processes. Currently they are studying how mechanics and chemistry affect material removal and surface smoothing in polishing optical glass. Experiments are carried out using the magnetorheological finishing (MRF) process. Prof. Jacobs' group and an international group of collaborators invented MRF in the mid '90's, and the technology was successfully spun off to form a local company, QED Technologies, Inc., in 1997.
