Robert E. Hopkins, 'Father of Optical Engineering,' dies at 94

The University flag was lowerered today in honor or Robert E. Hopkins, former director of the Institute of Optics and 'Father of Optical Engineering'.

Robert Hopkins, who was one of the first scientists to exploit the computer as a tool for designing optical systems and also among the first to recognize the important role the laser would play in the future of subjects like solid state physics and quantum physics, died July 4, shortly after celebrating his 94th birthday.
