Charles Munnerlyn, who
made a significant contribution toward the new Biomedical
Engineering/Optics building, was recently awarded the
"Edwin H. Land Medal" for his major public impact
in the fields of imaging science and technology. Following,
you will find an excerpt from the OSA Awards announcement:
"The Edwin H. Land Medal was established
in 1992. Land's interests were centered on the science
of optics, the mechanisms of vision, the properties and
use of light, and the creation, manipulation and communication
of images of all kinds. The award recognizes individuals
in one of these areas who, like Land, have demonstrated,
from a base of scientific knowledge, pioneering entrepreneurial
creativity that has had major public impact. The entrepreneurial
activity can be carried on in an industrial or business
setting, in academe or in government. The Land Medal is
a joint award of OSA and the Society for Imaging Science
and Technology, made possible through the support of the
Polaroid Foundation."
