Electron
Microscopy (with Labs)
2009 Course Description
-
June 24, Wednesday
afternoon
Introduction to Electron Optics, Mr. Brian McIntyre
(Rochester):
The history of microscopy will be presented with an
emphasis on the development of the electron lens system
and first TEM by Ruska. We will also discuss the fundamentals
of electron beam tools, including vacuum technology,
electron sources and electron lenses.
-
June 25,
Thursday all day
Image Formation, Mr. Brian McIntyre (Rochester):
A discussion of the image formation systems in the SEM
and TEM, as well as an introduction to simple image
processing and storage (both photographic and digital).
The afternoon lab session will involve sample preparation
techniques common to EM methods and the operation of
a research-grade FESEM.
Laboratory Session: Specimen Preparation/SEM operation
-
June 26,
Friday all day
Compositional Information Gathering, Mr. Brian McIntyre
(Rochester):
An introduction to the processes involved with the collection
of x-ray emission spectral data. Included will be the
physics and chemistry of x-ray spectrometry as well
as practical qualitative and quantitative analysis.
The afternoon lab session will involve TEM setup and
operation as well as x-ray microanalysis in the FESEM.
Laboratory Session: TEM operation / X-ray micro analysis
