Faculty Opening
The Institute of Optics
posted 12/01/2007

The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester announces a new tenure-track faculty position in Optical Engineering. A Ph.D. degree in Optics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field is required. Successful candidates will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and pursue a vigorous program of research in optics. Of special interest are the areas of optical system design, optical fabrication, optical testing, optical coatings, and non-imaging optics. The Institute is establishing a new Robert E. Hopkins Center for Optical Design & Engineering, which is envisioned primarily as a teaching facility in which students will learn to design, fabricate, assemble, and test optical systems as an integrated engineering experience. The ideal candidate will be one who is able to teach a course that will contribute to one or more of those areas. Appointments will be considered at Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor, depending on qualifications, ideally starting July 1, 2008. The University of Rochester has a strong commitment to diversity and actively encourages applications from candidates from groups underrepresented in higher education. The University is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Founded in 1929, The Institute of Optics is an academic department offering a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees in Optics, currently with 170 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled. Sixteen faculty members currently hold their primary appointment in Optics, and an additional twelve faculty hold Optics appointments with their primary appointment in other departments such as Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Center for Visual Science, the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, and Radiology.

Applications should include a letter describing teaching and research interest, a curriculum vitae with complete list of publications, and the names, mailing and email addresses, and telephone numbers of at least four references.
