Abstract

In this talk, the history, development and present status of optics research in Mexico will be described. Special emphasis will be given to the Centro de Investigaciones en Optica (CIO) in León Guanajuato Mexico. Founded in 1980, CIO now has over 60 researchers and has become a strong presence in the international optical community. CIO hosts two main divisions: Optics and Photonics. Researchers in the Optics division are dedicated to programs that include classical optics, optical design and engineering, holography, interferometry, polarimetry, vision, etc. In Photonics, researchers explore problems in optical properties of matter, optical fibers, nanomaterials, ultrafast optics, terahertz dynamic systems, photonic crystals, etc.

Bio

Daniel Malacara obtained his PhD in Optics (65) and his MS (63) from the University of Rochester. He has published more than one hundred and fifty refereed papers in Optical Engineering optics journals. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE). He has served the Optical Society of America as a Topical Editor for Applied Optics from 1989 to 1992. He also served SPIE as a member of the Board of Governors from 1987 to 1991. In 1989 he was granted the Rudolf and Hilda Kingslake Chair in Optical Engineering, at the Institute of Optics of the University of Rochester. He received the A. E. Conrady Award for Scientific Achievement by SPIE in 1984, the Galileo Galilei Award in 1996 by SPIE, the Joseph Fraunhofer Award / Robert M. Burley Prize from OSA in 2002 and the Gold Medal Award by SPIE in 2012. Daniel was a Faculty of Sciences at the Institute of Physics of the UNAM and is Co-founder of the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics of México. He also founded the Center for Research in Optics in León in 1980 of which he was director until 1989. His research interests include optical testing and interferometry, optical design, and optical metrology.
