Julie Bentley excels in undergraduate teaching

October 18, 2014

Congratulations to Julie Bentley, Associate Professor of Optics, who is one of three recipients of the University's 2014 Goergen Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching!

Julie is a PhD graduate of The Institute of Optics, who worked at Hughes Aircraft for two years, then at  Corning Tropel for another 12 years. She joined the Institute as an adjunct professor in 1998. "Julie is a crucial part of our undergraduate and graduate program," notes Institute Director Xi-Cheng Zhang. She helped launch the Institute's B.S. in optical engineering and is praised by students and faculty colleagues as an inspiring teacher, whose experience in industry provides additional insight for her students. Well done, Julie!

For the award ceremony, Optics Alumna Katie Schwertz '08 returned to speak on Julies' behalf. Both were all smiles in the picture taken by Adam Fenster, University of Rochester :-)
