As a test of the theory of power broadening in a two-level atom, a system
closely approximating a two-level atom was prepared by using a
frequency-stabilized cw dye laser to optically pump sodium atoms in an
atomic beam into the F=2, MF=2 ground state, and a second laser to
couple this level to the 3P3/2 F=3, MF=3 excited state.
The resulting line shape was accurately Lorentzian over a large range of
incident field strengths, and the power broadening and saturation at
resonance were also in accord with the theory.
