THE NANO-OPTICS MOUNTAIN BIKE HALL OF FAME

MTB trips 2010

2010 was a good MTB year! Moab, Garraf, Alps, Adirondacks, and more. Here are some highlights.
January 2010: Dryer Road Park, Victor, NY. Not that this one was a highlight .. It was freak'n cold! But hey, this proves that MTBing in January can be done.

Next time I better go ice fishing.

Fort Hill was trembling in the cold.

February 2010: El Garraf, Sitges / Castelldefels, Spain. This trail belongs to standard inventory. It has to be done in any weather. It follows some of the trails laid out by Napoleon, the grande rondonee.

Just starting.

El Trono. It bears good memories!

On top of the 'puig'. Ready for the jump-off.

March 2010: El Garraf, Sitges / Castelldefels, Spain. Here we are again .. It's still too cold to bike in Rochester. This outing was in company with Jan Renger. The MTB trip starts with a train ride from Castelldefels to Sitges.

It continues with a ceremony at 'El Crostinet'.

400m higher up, the trip had to be interrupted. 'El Supercaliber' reached the end of his life.

After all these years, all these trips, all the sweat, and all the pain! Supercaliber is no more ..

We might as well smoke a 'puro'.

Jan continued while I pushed the bike down the mountain, took the train back home, and tried to find a new frame. No luck. But hey, my Fisher frame is 'handbuilt in the USA' and has a lifetime warranty! So I send an email to Gary and his dear friends .. Should you ever consider buying a bike from Gary Fisher, then you should read this. Keep your receipts till you're old and grey .. No more Fisher for me!

A few days later, with Jan's bike.

Should have brought my snowplough from Rochester ..

But who cares once you reach the top!

May 2010: Finger Lakes Wilderness Area, between Lodi and Trumansburg, NY. This is Loni's 25th birthday outing. Not everyone enjoyed the mud. But the trail is great and brings you by past beautiful meadows and ponds.

She does look like 25, dosn't she?

Yeah .. It's the mud that keeps you young and crisp!

In mom's footsteps ..

Wildlife on the trail.

Well deserved celebration in Trumansburg.

May 2010: Stid Hill, Bristol, NY. An outing with Mr. Midget to my favorite local trail. A great treat and a great ride. Singletrack throughout, of course.

Who's pulling whom?

Pooped! .. despite the fast glasses.

June 2010: Moab, Utah. This was the highlight of MTBing in my young and innocent life! Alex, le sanglier de Bourgogne, escaped from a conference a few days early to meet up for three straight MTB days in Moab.

After being dropped off by the Coyote shuttle.

Ready for the 'Whole Enchilada' !

Alex, on the edge of Nirvana ..

Edge of Porcupine Trail.

Alex, testing his parachute.

Day 2: Slickrock for breakfast.

A surface like sandpaper.

Sandpaper hurts!

After a banana, muffin, and lots of caffeine: Amasa Back Trail!

Damn .. these rentals are heavy!

.. and he's still sure this is the right trail .. stubborn ass!

Hey all cool dude .. no piranhas, no crocodiles!

Day 3: Fisher Mesa. Quite a drive to get up there. The trail starts with a majestic 1000ft downhill. Same way back up at the end!!!

Really cold up there ..

.. but the views and the scenery are unbeatable!

It's getting warmer the lower we get.

Ready to climb back up.

July 2010: Truebsee Trail, Engelberg, Switzerland. It was absolutely necessary to take a break from a meeting and rent a mountain bike at the train station. The weather wasn't the greatest, the bike neither, but the climb and the views were magnificent.

Not much of a view ..

Where the heck am I?

Fortunately I meet a bunch of Swiss tourist guides.

September 2010: El Garraf, Sitges / Castelldefels, Spain. Yes, this trail again! But this time with Jan Renger all the way to the top. No broken frame.

Just a flat ..

Jan reaching the top of the first mountain.

Yes, it's bumpy Dr. Renger!

Jan reaching the bottom of the first mountain.

An ever reappearing shot. El Trono. This time with a new bike (old components, new frame). No longer Fisher!

Jan Renger, conqueror of 'Puig les Agulles' !

Wonderful vista.

The Mediteranean at our feet.

3 days later .. 'El Trono' again.

On top of puig. Not so fresh anymore.

Bragging with new bike ..

Ready for downhill ..

October 2010: East Bay, Rochester, NY. Rainer Benz arrived for a blitz visit from Heidelberg, Germany. It's been a while since he's been on Rochester trails. The weiss beer definitely takes its toll.

Very beautiful Irondequoit Bay.

The days before winter are counted.

As I said, the weiss beer takes its toll ..

October 2010: Dryer Road Park, Victor, NY. Fall in Rochester. The beautiful foliage pays for the long winters. Gustavo, el 'Cupinista Minero', came for a visit from Brazil and revived his Rochester memories ..

Beautiful fall colors.

Gustavo, clearly having a blast!

Rochester at its best ..

..

Gustavo getting ready for 'Juicy Bacon'.

Mandatory stop. This tree is Gustavo's favorite. It holds a great great secret ..

November 2010: Ontario Pathways Trail, Canandaigua, NY. One more family outing before winter hits us. Ontario Pathways is a true standard. It goes 16 miles through beautiful flatlands, along long abandoned railroad tracks.

Jan's feeble soccer legs had a rusty start.

But Nadja's graceful ballerina legs went full steam ahead!

Half way to our 'Crepes Place' in Canandaigua.

November 2010: Ok-wa-riga Camp, Inlet, NY. The mandatory MTB ride during our annual Nano-Optics workshop. But this time we're very late in the season and it's bitter cold.

.. but that doesn't hold Scott Carney, Jan Gieseler, and Loni Novotny back. And little 'Iron Leif' simply doesn't care ..

Jan ..

.. and Loni, distorted by uncertainty.
