This book provides an overview of nano-optics by covering both, mathematical / theoretical and experimental concepts. The book is intended as a textbook but is also usable as a reference for scientists and teachers. Problem sets are provided for each topic.

The book covers topics such as strongly focused light, the diffraction limit, near-field microscopy, experimental techniques, properties of nanoscale emitters and interactions with local environments. The subsequent chapters provide an introduction into photonic crystals, optical resonators, and surface plasmons. Forces generated in confined fields and the role of electromagnetic fluctuations in nanoscale structures (van der Waals / Casimir forces) are discussed. The final chapter provides an overview of theoretical methods commonly used in the field of nano-optics.
