Fundamentals of Integrated Photonics

2017 Course Description

Target Audience

This course is targeted for students, researchers, and engineers in industry, who want to learn the fundamental aspects of integrated photonics. It is essential for anyone interested in taking the second part devoted to integrated silicon photonics.

Description

The first day of the course will cover fundamentals of optical waveguides and how they can be used to fabricate passive components required by integrated photonics such as directional couplers, Bragg gratings, and micro-ring resonators. The second day will focus on the nonlinear effects and discuss how integrated photonics can be used for bio-sensing. The last lecture of the course will cover active devices made using optical waveguides and will also discuss the testing and packaging of photonic integrated circuits.

Prerequisites

Familiarity with optics and electromagnetics is a prerequisite. It is assumed that each attendee has taken a course on physical optics or electromagnetic theory in the past. However, no previous knowledge of integrated photonics or optical waveguides is required.
